187 Visitors a Week, Zero Enquiries: 3 Truths We Found on Our Own Site

The mystery: great numbers, no business

Open GA4 and the dashboard looks great: 187 active users in 7 days, up 110% week over week, 257 pageviews, 190 new users. Looking only at these numbers, you'd think business is about to boom. Reality: zero contact form submissions, zero WhatsApp clicks, not a single key event fired.

This situation is remarkably common — we see it constantly in client audits. Traffic numbers don't lie, but they hide. This time we took the scalpel to our own site and found three truths behind 'lots of visits, no leads.'

Truth one: your traffic may not be customers at all

Red flag number one: of 187 sessions, 96% were Direct. Organic Search contributed exactly 2. Real new prospects rarely type your URL directly. A Direct spike usually means bot traffic, your own team testing, or untagged email and social links (when GA4 can't read a source, it buckets the visit as Direct).

Red flag two: geography. We're a Hong Kong company, yet the largest user group came from Singapore (83 users) — more than the US and UK combined. A classic hosting-bot signature. Red flag three: 257 pageviews produced only 13 scrolls and 22 engagement events. Over 90% of 'visitors' never scrolled at all.

How to fix it: turn on GA4's internal traffic filter, add UTM parameters to every email and shared link, and watch scroll and engagement rates instead of raw pageviews. Your real visitor count after cleaning will be much smaller — but every one of them is human.

Truth two: 69 people opened the chatbot, nobody said a word

Our chatbot was opened 69 times — proof the button works and placement is fine. But the chat_message event count was zero. Visitors opened the window, glanced, and closed it. The problem was the opening message: 'I'm the assistant, I can help with websites, SEO/GEO and AI solutions' followed by a four-line feature list. That's not a conversation starter — it's a product catalogue.

People don't want a menu in a chat window; they want one easy question to answer. We rewrote the opener as a single question: 'Quick question — is your website bringing you enquiries right now? I can run a free 30-second SEO check,' plus four one-tap reply buttons (free check / does ChatGPT know us / new website quote / WhatsApp directly). The visitor went from 'think and type' to 'tap one button.'

We also added two automatic triggers: when a visitor scrolls past half the page and stays 15 seconds, or when a desktop user moves their mouse toward the tab bar (exit intent), the chat opens proactively — once per session. Waiting to be clicked is passive; showing up at the moment of peak interest or imminent exit is sales.

Truth three: 15 people reached the contact page and stayed 0 seconds

The contact page is the closest page to money on the whole site. 15 users arrived; average time on page was 0 seconds — they bounced on load. The cause was obvious: the original hero occupied the entire first screen (logo, huge headline, subhead, two CTA buttons). The form required scrolling to discover. Visitors who can't see the next step assume they're in the wrong place.

We cut the hero height by more than half, dropped the headline from 6xl to 4xl, removed decorative elements, and got the form into the first viewport. We added a large green WhatsApp card in the sidebar ('Fastest: WhatsApp us — usually replies within 1 hour') as a zero-friction exit for people who hate forms.

The seven fixes we shipped (copy them)

One: mark generate_lead, contact_submit and whatsapp_click as key events in GA4 — without this, conversions are invisible even when they happen. Two: rewrite the chatbot opener from a feature catalogue into one question. Three: enlarge the quick-reply buttons, add emoji, add a WhatsApp shortcut. Four: auto-trigger the chat on 60% scroll and exit intent, once per session.

Five: shrink the contact page hero so the form sits in the first viewport. Six: add a URL input to the homepage hero — visitors type their own domain and land on the free-audit page with it prefilled; the path from landing to lead capture is a single field. Seven: cut the chatbot lead form from five fields to three visible, with company and interest tucked behind an optional toggle.
